Technical data is all good , but we should not forget about sports. As to statistics Portuguese citizens are on 17% more sporty than average in Europe. Jogging, football and power lifting become more and more popular from year to year, nutrition supplements sales are growing, people want to become like their idols, such as Sergi Constance for example, whose origin is Portuguese. People start thinking about their body, about what they eat and what they think, about their lifestyle. The more people include sports in their daily life the less smokers are registered in statistics department, less alcohol is being sold, you think about governmental revenue ? No, that’s not correct, every government want their people be healthy. Here is a list of Portuguese sports people government is proud of.
With current technological advances, our ability to generate and acquire data largely exceeded our ability to make sense of these same data. In this context, areas such as Information Visualization and Design Information fulfill an important mission. Relevant information is not a given, and particularly now, when cultural artifacts are measured in gigabytes and terabytes, the task of selecting, organizing and providing information in an efficient manner is essential for knowledge and intelligence.
Public information in Portugal is freely accessible to any citizen, however is in its most dispersed over long statistical tables that hardly allow the recognition of consistent standards. When analyzed by traditional media, which to a large majority of the population is the main – if not the only – means of access to data, they are only used to reinforce certain argument that does not always correspond to more relevant to the public domain. Therefore, it is imperative that a broad public information is filtered and displayed according to a set of questions and answers that lead to knowledge. Understand information and turn it into knowledge is unshakable form of power. And this is the main objective of Shapes of Portugal.
The Forms database of Portugal has been developed since January 2007 and aims to create a file of numerous statistical data on the 308 Portuguese municipalities. The database is being implemented in MySQL and gathers data from various sources such as the National Statistics Institute, National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, National Geographic Information System and Higher Technical Institute. Some curious data is for example, the creation date of each Portuguese municipality, as well as your latitude and longitude, and other common parameters such as population density, literacy rate, among others. The aim is to gather a large number of variables to be able to perform a number of relevant views about them.
